Estimate the potential capital gains tax on shares, ETFs and managed funds

Enter your purchase cost, brokerage fees and sale proceeds to estimate your capital gain and potential CGT. You can also include the 12-month CGT discount and prior capital losses.

Calculate your share capital gain

Your capital gain is generally based on the difference between your sale proceeds and the relevant cost base of your shares. Eligible costs associated with acquiring or disposing of the investment may be included when working out the cost base.

Include eligible brokerage costs

Brokerage and other eligible transaction costs connected with buying or selling shares may affect the cost base or capital proceeds used in the calculation. Keeping accurate records of these costs can help you work out your capital gain correctly.

Held 12 months or more?

If eligible shares have been held for more than 12 months, you may qualify for the 50% CGT discount if the relevant requirements are met.

Prior capital losses

An eligible capital loss from a previous year may be used to offset a capital gain, subject to the applicable rules. This may reduce your net capital gain and the amount included in your taxable income.

How your shares CGT estimate is calculated

The calculator compares your total sale proceeds with the relevant adjusted cost base to estimate your capital gain or loss. Purchase costs, brokerage, eligible selling costs, holding period and available capital losses can affect the final taxable gain.

Important

This calculator provides an estimate only. Your actual CGT liability can vary depending on your circumstances, eligible transaction costs, holding period, capital losses, distributions and other applicable Australian tax rules.
